Here are the tracks that I wrote for Monotonik last winter. After waiting for months and getting various promises from Simon it now appears that these tracks are never gonna come out on the label. Therefor I decided to make them available here, for free and for your pleasure. I hope you enjoy.

As you have probably noticed, I’ve not been uploading much new material lately. It is simply due to the fact that I’ve got a job again and being made redundant was the idea of this blog in the first place. I don’t have as much time for writing music now as I am working during the week. Nothing abnormal there But I’m not gonna stop writing music that I’ve written for over 20 years nor will I be burying this blog. I hope patience from you.

Zero G - Ransom / Scorpion

Good evening! Tak and I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, or a normal Thursday evening if you’re from across the world. We also hope you can stomach the terrible tracks we’re going to be dishing out tonight. Tak may not be posting as he’s in Alabama with his family, but he has a release in store that’s a destroyer.

The release I’ll be delivering this evening is from a man called Zero G. A quick search shows little about him, yet this didn’t fool me when I peeped this release for the first time. The first track, ‘Ransom’ features a moody synth and sort of bongo in the beginning of the track. Very junglish and tribal, dark and foggy almost. As the song progresses and drops you hit a sort of scratching, wobbly tune that will no doubt be orgasmic to anybody who is a wobstep fan.

The second track, ‘Scorpion’, is something that would be heard on Dubstep Allstars of some sort. It’s a lighter version of Ransom, with the same type of wobble. It’s a bit easier on the ears and isn’t as dramatic; something you could get work done to. It’s a fantastic track, regardless of the similarity to it’s A Side.

Mistabishi - From Memory (Matrix Remix) / I Feel LOL

Ah Mistabishi, it has been way too long. Although this may be his last release on Hospital Records after his pseudo-DJing scandal at Bassment presents Hospitality at Bar Mango. Personally, I could care less whether he DJ’s live or not at a set. There is a certain tinge of authenticity that comes with live mixing, as long as the tunes are good and nobody can see, who will notice? Although this clearly wasn’t the case at Hospitality. He even released a previously unreleased track on breakbeat.co.uk

In any case, the two tracks featured on one of the latest Hospital releases are absolutely wonderful, with a hint of weird not previously featured on Hospital or any label for that matter. The first track is Matrix’s remix of ‘From Memory’ from the album Drop. It’s an eerie sounding, almost euphoric cut of the song. The male and female voices are capped in such a way that gives it a soulful feeling unmatched by anybody else. It’s quite an oddball of a song.

The second track is aptly called ‘I Feel LOL’ and rightly so. It’s a bouncy tune with a female synthesized type of voice. It features a seemingly teenage idea of love with quite a few curses that do indeed bring the LOL. It’s a neat little track, yet at about 3:30 into the tracker it goes through a bunch of speed changes and the last minute or two finishes out at at least 1/2 speed. It really could have been better without the slowdown.

In any case, it’s a must have for any collection.

I really like this. Simple, very well executed, and feels like the first video to move the whole 80’s/electro thing forwards visually rather than just dredging up tired retro cliches.

I’m not sure how many of you are fans of the Irish band The Frames, but… Back in 2005 their lead singer Glen Hansard was in Prague working with Marketa Irglova on a score for the film Beauty In Trouble. They ended up recording some tunes and released a self titled album, The Swell Season, in 06′. It’s been a couple of years and The Swell Season has released another album titled Strict Joy. I’ve been listening to it on and off for the past few weeks and it’s really growing on me. Their voices are amazing, it’s a relaxing and lyrically powerful album.

Sheryl Crow readies up re-issue of "Tuesday Night Music Club"

Sheryl Crow’s debut album Tuesday Night Music Club was a monumental album. It changed the way female singers/songwriters are perceived in the music industry and put Sheryl’s name in the middle of the rock map. It is packed with greatly-written songs and tracks that defined a decade. Who could speak of the 90s’ without mentioning “All I Wanna Do” or “Leaving Las Vegas?” Also, no crush compilation would be the same with the vulnerable ballad “Strong Enough.”

That being said, it’s comes as no wonder that Sheryl is actually preparing a re-issue of this epic album with everything from that time that wasn’t made available originally. The album is also going to have a single released by the name of “Killer Life.” The new packaging will have a 3-disc set, a documentary, new tracks, remixes and a lush booklet. City Of Ember DVDrip

One of the most gorgeous-looking films I’ve seen this year is City of Ember, the Fox/Walden adaptation of Jeanne Duprau’s young-adult fantasy novel about a post-apocalyptic underground city. Although the story is aimed at younger audiences, it’s still enjoyable for grown-ups. The movie should be viewed on as large a screen as you can find, giving you the sense that you’re this close to the fascinating and decaying city where the story is set.

The movie’s prologue lays out the premise clearly. In the future, something goes haywire that causes the end of the world, but fortunately top U.S. scientists have created an underground city to keep a portion of mankind safe. The inhabitants will not be told about the Earth’s past, so they won’t be traumatized and will assume that their underground city is the only civilization. A box with instructions for returning to the Earth’s surface will open in 200 years, which should be time enough for the Earth to be inhabitable again. However, over the course of time the box becomes lost, and after more than two centuries have passed, the city is starting to run out of resources and is falling apart.
As the city declines, two children in Ember, Lina Mayfleet (Saorise Ronan) and Doon Harrow (Harry Treadaway) have both come of age and start working for the city — Lina as a messenger, and Doon in the pipeworks. Doon wanted to be an electrician and is dying to tinker with the city’s enormous generator, so it will stop its increasingly long and frequent blackouts. The mayor of Ember (Bill Murray) organizes a task force but otherwise seems to do little. Lina and Doon’s older acquaintances also seem uninterested, telling the young people not to concern themselves with larger matters. But they are determined to find out what’s wrong with their city, which to their mind is the only place where humans live, and fix whatever they can.

The movie reminded me a little of Dark City (the theatrical version, not the director’s cut), but less creepy and more appropriate for kids. Both movies are set in an artificial city, created by beings other than those who dwell in it, for purposes the residents do not yet understand. In addition, both films open with the story behind the city’s creation, which is spelled out for us in detail, and the suspense is not in our discoveries but in those of the characters. I would have preferred the increased suspense in keeping the city’s origins a mystery from us, but the straightforward telling gives the movie more of a fairytale quality and makes it more accessible to younger viewers.

Caroline Thompson’s script gives us strong main characters and entertaining supporting characters, but is a little light on story (which is the same feeling I’ve had about other movies she’s scripted, such as Corpse Bride and Edward Scissorhands). I felt like City of Ember ended at an ambiguous moment — right at the point where I expected another half-hour of conflict and action. I realize the book ended at this point, and also that there are sequels to the novel, so perhaps this is meant to leave the door open for sequels to the movie as well. It did feel like there were some loose ends — I expected something more sinister from certain characters than what was delivered, and some items that appeared important were never quite explained.

However, the slightness of the story is more than made up for by the compelling characters, especially Lina and Doon. Tim Robbins (who plays Doon’s father), Bill Murray, Toby Jones, and especially Martin Landau as Doon’s coworker, provide vivid and colorful support. Gil Kenan, who previously directed the animated Monster House, has brought us another film in which the setting is a type of character itself — this time the city of Ember, with its failing generator of a heart, and its warm lights that are starting to flicker and fade.

City of Ember will surely remind audiences of another family-friendly movie this year about human survival in the future, Wall-E. It’s odd that two films with such similar themes about the future of Earth would appear in the same year, but I can’t tell you whether that’s coincidence (as with the Capote/Infamous debacle) or some political sign of our times. No overt political message smacked me in the face during this film; instead, I was absorbed in the curious and fascinating city for an hour and a half, enough to want another half-hour of movie, and cheering on the main characters. It’s a simple and lovely tale, perfect for a family outing.

Restrictions on Downloading and Software

I’m currently mulling over a new initiative by the local authority (LA) which is apparently set to ultimately affect everyone working within local authorities. We have been recently issued with notice that we won’t be able to download anything from the internet or upload any software onto LA computers. This is due to the recent very public issues government (in most forms) has faced with losing lists, confidentiality etc. If I want to continue using the computer as I do now then I will need to make a special case and get special approval to do so.

I’ve been reflecting on how this will now affect peoples’ practice. What does this mean for me? Well I use a number of online tools which (to be used more effectively) I need to download some software, or equally if I’ve done work on line using these tools and if I want to be able to use what I’ve been working on I need to be able to download things. (Documents from Google Docs, using online bookmarks like Delicious, downloading supporting photos from Flickr, mind maps from bubblus, etc etc).

I also download various PDF files to read them and to disseminate the information to others, including young people. That’s without thinking of the additional software I need for doing some of the video editing I’ve been involved in (although I usually use my own computer for that anyway but it doesn’t negate the feeling that this directive brings) and also what about music, podcasts etc?!?!  In an era where we are trying to encourage and develop more collaborative ways of working it feels like I’m about to be chained to the past by what feels like a knee jerk (although no doubt well thought through in parts) reaction!

Part of my mulling is to challenge myself. Is this just my reaction to Change or actually do I have some valid arguements? Your thoughts would be welcome!

Avoiding Snail Mail: Easy Ways To Share Audio and Video

Have you ever tried to send someone audio files via email?  Or worse still, video files?  Working in the music & multimedia education field I find myself frequently needing to send or receive recordings of songs, photos, videos and presentations to a range of people that include students, attendees of my training sessions, clients and colleagues.  These sorts of files are simply too big for email and if you’re like me, you’ll do anything to avoid resorting to burning a disk, finding a padded envelope and making the long trek to the Post Office.

The easy solution is to use a file sharing website: you upload files from your computer to the site and provide the location details to your recipient or group of recipients.  They can then visit the site and download the files they need.  It’s a digital “locker”, if you like.

My own use of these sites includes:

• Distributing session notes to attendees of my training sessions or conference presentations.  Many are happy to have an electronic copy and we save a few trees in the process
• Sharing collections of loops, sound effects and videos for film scoring workshops
• Receiving audio recordings and MIDI files for transcribing or arranging jobs I’m working on
• Receiving large scores for orchestral copying work

File-sharing sites are also particularly useful for itinerant music teachers without a permanent office or computer.  They can store their own schedules, student lists and other working documents which are then accessible from any computer in any school.  I know of one teacher that uploads backing tracks so that his students can download them at home for practice purposes and another that uses a file-sharing site for student assignment submissions.

The Basics

If you’ve never used a file-sharing site before, here’s how it works:

• You go to the file-sharing website (see options below)
• Sign-in (if applicable)
• Click the upload button
• Select the files you want to send and then wait while the files upload
• When the upload process is finished there will be a link (web address) you can email to your friend.  When they click on the link, they’ll see your file/s and be able to download them to their own computer.

Most sites offer a free service for files (a single file or combination of files) up to a 100MB in size and there are a few that offer uploads of 200MB, 500MB, or even more.  There’s also a paid option if you need more space.

To give you an idea of file sizes, consider the following rough guide:

• PDFs or Word documents are usually small enough to be measured in kilobytes and are suitable to email
• A single photo at high resolution can be 5-10MB or more
• A 3-minute pop song in MP3 format (compressed) can be around 5MB
• A 3-minute pop song in WAV format can be around 50MB
• A 7-minute cartoon might be 70MB

My two favourite file-sharing websites have been drop.io and Mediafire, but there are plenty of other choices out there, like Soundcloud which was designed specifically for sharing audio files.

Drop.io is simple to use, you don’t need to sign up to use it and it includes lots of extras like the voice memo feature.  You can password-protect your “drop” and you can even opt to receive notifcations when files are downloaded from – or added to – your drop.

MediaFire is also straightforward to use, allows uploads up to 100MB and if you choose to set up a user name you can access extra features like the ability to organise your collections of files into folders.

Soundcloud is a recent discovery, but looks like a great solution for audio files.  Soundcloud supports AIFF, WAV, FLAC, OGG, MP3 and AAC files and you can choose to make your uploaded files public (for anyone to access) or private (accessible only by those you grant access).  You do need to sign up for this service, but one huge benefit is that there’s no file-size limit.
